This November, Southend Pier will be transformed into a moving sea of red as thousands of knitted and crocheted poppies are installed along its full 1.33-mile length. Poppies on the Pier is set to be the UK’s largest Remembrance art installation, created entirely from handmade poppies donated by people from across the world.
The project is both a tribute and a community achievement. Each poppy has been carefully crafted by volunteers – from local knitters and crocheters to contributors as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA – coming together to honour those who served and sacrificed in times of war. Their collective work will line the railings of the world’s longest pleasure pier, culminating in a striking display at the pier head.
Alongside the display, the Royal British Legion will host a Poppy Appeal stall, and local groups will support with performances and remembrance activity, making this a poignant and inclusive way to mark Remembrance Day in Southend.
